Visiting Peratallada: A journey to the origin of stone

preview

Peratallada is not an ordinary tourist destination; it is an architectural jewel carved directly into the bedrock. Declared a Historic-Artistic Site, this municipality in the Baix Empordà is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval architectural centers in Catalonia. Its name, which literally means "carved stone," perfectly describes what visitors will find upon arrival: a labyrinth of streets, walls, and arches that seem to rise from the earth itself.

When asking yourself what to see in Peratallada, the immediate answer is its impressive defensive moat. Carved into sandstone with chisels in the 10th century, it surrounds the fortified center with a depth that reaches 8 meters in some sections. Walking along the edge of the moat or strolling down Calle de la Roca helps you understand the age-old symbiosis between its inhabitants and the geological setting. It is this very stone that gives the village its characteristic golden-ochre glow at sunset, creating a mystical atmosphere that has inspired generations of artisans and potters.

At the heart of the village lies Plaza de las Voltes, an arcaded gem where time seems to stand still. Here, beneath its arches, life moves at a different pace. It is the perfect starting point for a Slow Travel route through Girona, combining historical discovery with the pleasures of the rich Empordà gastronomy. But to experience Peratallada in an authentic way, you need to go one step further and take part in its creative tradition.

Your perfect day in the Baix Empordà

Morning: The Golden Triangle

Start your day by walking along the walls of Peratallada and climbing up to the Keep Tower. If you have time, visit the nearby villages of Pals and Ullastret (with its Iberian archaeological site). This area gathers some of the finest rural beauty in the province of Girona.

Midday: Local Flavor

Empordà is famous for its “sea and mountain” cuisine. Book a table at one of the village’s medieval restaurants and enjoy a Pals rice dish or a traditional fish stew. The calm after lunch is the perfect prelude to the workshop.

Afternoon: Workshop at Ussing Art

As the light softens over the stone walls, come to our studio. It is the perfect moment to turn the day’s inspiration into something tangible. Our 4-hand pottery experience is the finishing touch to any creative getaway.

The magic of clay: 4-hand pottery in Girona

At Ussing Art, we believe pottery is a language of connection. Our 4-hand workshop is unique in the Empordà. It is not only about learning how to center clay on the wheel; it is about coordinating rhythm, pressure, and breathing with another person.

It is one of the most sought-after activities for couples on the Costa Brava who want more than a simple tour. Under Martin’s expert and patient guidance, you will discover how clay comes alive through collaboration. It is a physical metaphor for communication, set in a peaceful environment where the only sounds are the wheel turning and the touch of water on clay.

This workshop is designed for all levels. It does not matter if you have never touched a pottery wheel before; the goal is the process, digital disconnection, and the joy of creating something together in a studio with soul.

How to find us

The Ussing Art workshop is located at Avinguda de la Bisbal, 3, at one of the most accessible pedestrian entrances to Peratallada.

Parking: The village is pedestrianized for visitors. We recommend parking in the properly signposted municipal parking areas on the outskirts. The parking lot on the road to La Bisbal is the closest, just a 2-minute walk from our door.

What to do if it rains: If your day of touring Girona is threatened by rain, our workshop is the perfect refuge. Few things are as cozy as working with clay while listening to the rain falling on medieval stone.
